Tourists Cheer the Pope

SEVERAL hundred tourists and Parisians lined the rue de Saint-Jacques and the rue Soufflot to cheer the Pope as he left the church of Saint Etienne du Mont where he celebrated Mass Saturday morning. The small crowd was made up of almost no WYD travellers who were all busy making their way to Longchamp. Tourists or Parisians living around the quarter of the Panthéon stopped to wait when they saw the lines of police vans and realized that the Pope would be passing by. Some had no idea that he was anywhere near the area and happened on the scene purely by accident. John Paul II appeared in his Popemobile around 1:00 p.m. and all hands waved a friendly hello as he was driven slowly out in front of the Panthéon and then down the rue de Saint-Jacques on his way back to rest before the Saturday night Baptismal Vigil.
